The Endswell Foundation is an independent registered charity, operating under the Renewal group of organizations. Through the 1990s Endswell was the largest, BC based, private foundation funding environmental issues in the province.

Carol Newell founded Endswell with the intention to spend beyond the annual earnings - choosing to maximize its immediate impact over its longevity as a private institution. This spend-down strategy is highlighted by our largest annual grant to the building of the Tides Canada Foundation. Tides Canada will be a lasting legacy: a robust Public Foundation that will serve the philanthropic needs of hundreds of Canadians.

As part of the legacy of Endswell, Carol Newell initiated and funded the Social Justice Fund at Tides Canada, which supports “innovative, initiatives that promote more broadly shared economic opportunity, robust and inclusive democratic process, respect for human rights, and cultural diversity.”

Endswell has shifted the administration and management of its grant making to Tides, capturing the synergies and overhead savings that public foundations can provide.
